About fear that has no boundaries
Świat bez instrukcji,
każdy krok to zagrożenie —
drzwi nie są wyjściem.
About a reality that cannot be ordered
Beau Is Afraid is a film that doesn't try to be coherent in the classic sense. It's more like an experience than a story.
It is the story of Beau — a man who is trying to reach his mother's house. This journey quickly ceases to be logical. Reality begins to unseal, events lose continuity, and the boundary between what is real and what is internal ceases to matter.
Ari Aster creates a world that works according to the logic of fear. There are no stable rules here. There are no reference points. Every decision can lead to disaster, every move — to the next level of chaos.
This is not a film about one event.
It's a film about the state.
About living in constant tension, in which everything seems to be a potential threat.
Paweł: When anxiety becomes a system
Not every fear has a specific shape. Sometimes it is everywhere, in the looks, in the sounds, in what can happen. Its constant control limits your life. The feeling of guilt does not let you sleep peacefully. You are afraid of what is instinctive in you. The world does not always come together in a logical whole. One event leads to another, but the meaning is lost somewhere in the process. Guilt can find a way even where there was none. Sometimes the simplest path becomes the most difficult. Because it's not the distance that is the problem, but everything that comes along the way. There are things you feel responsible for, even if you had no influence on them. The judgment of others is deep in your mind. Shame often comes to the surface and affects your life.
You try to control reality to feel safe, but the harder you try, the more everything slips away. You are looking for a safe place where you can be fully yourself, and you are also looking for safe people. The relationships that make us up are also the ones that are the hardest to understand. Love, control, expectations: sometimes it's hard to separate one from the other, because manipulation is hard to see. The most difficult moments come when we feel judged, but not by others, but by our own thoughts. And all the time we think that we are to blame for everything.
Agnieszka: Overload with no way out
I look at Beau Is Afraid as a story about overload that never ends.
From the perspective of a person on the spectrum, this film is surprisingly familiar. Not because of the events, but because of the way reality works.
Too many stimuli.
Too much information.
Too many things that need to be processed at the same time.
Beau's world is unpredictable. Any situation can suddenly change. Any human being can turn out to be a threat.
In such a world, the body remains in constant tension.
There is no room for regeneration. There is no moment when you can let go.
This film is not about fear as an emotion.
It shows fear as a state of being.
And maybe that's why it's so difficult — because it doesn't give you distance.
It does not allow you to say: "it's just history".
Because for some it is not fiction.
It's the way they feel the world.
