About the fact that not every story begins with us
Dom pełen tajemnic,
strych pamięta więcej niż my —
coś spadniena głowę.
About the story that begins in front of us
Hereditary is one of those films that at first glance looks like a horror movie about a haunting. Over time, however, it turns out that the most important things happen much closer — in the family, in relationships, in what is passed down from generation to generation.
The film tells the story of the Graham family, who are trying to find themselves after the death of their grandmother. Over time, things begin to come to light that have not been talked about before. Secrets, tensions, unspoken grievances.
In this story, fear doesn't just come from the supernatural. It comes from the feeling that certain processes began a long time ago — before the characters had any influence on who they would be.
Ari Aster builds tension very slowly. He doesn't scare with sudden effects. Instead, he shows something much more disturbing: a family that begins to fall apart from the inside.
It's a film about inheritance.
But not only genes.
Paweł: What goes on
Not everything we inherit is visible. Sometimes something that no one has named passes on. It is a shadow in the family history that waits patiently. It is inevitable and inevitable. There are moments that divide life into "before" and "after". One second, one event. And everything starts to crack. When suddenly there is severe pain, everyone tries to protect themselves. But everyone suffers just as much, they want to cope with the loss. However, it is not always possible to avoid destruction.
The house is supposed to protect, but sometimes the walls remember more than we do and something is still moving in them. You try to save what you can, but fate arranges the cards in its own way, and you feel fear and confusion. Some stories are whispered, conveyed in half-words, because when someone says them out loud, everything starts to fall into place too clearly. You try to express your feelings, although you can't always do it. Grief tries to break through from under the skin, what is repressed always comes back and causes pain.
The family can be a system of interconnected vessels. When one breaks, they all tremble. The greatest fear comes when we understand that not everything is under our control. And there is no escaping the memory that haunts everyone. You follow in the footsteps of others, even if you don't want to. Sometimes the story goes in one direction, you can stop, you can try to change it, but something still leads on. You feel like a toy in a dollhouse and you try to gain control.
Agnieszka: Family as a system of tensions
I look at this film primarily as a story about tension in the family. About how emotions can circulate between people for years.
From the perspective of a person on the spectrum, something else is very visible here: overload.
In this family, no one can regulate emotions in a safe way. Every tension is reflected in the next person. Every conflict leaves a trace.
Annie tries to understand all this rationally. She analyzes, searches for meaning, tries to name what is happening. But there are experiences that do not lend themselves to analysis.
When the tension becomes too great, it begins to turn into the body. Into screaming. Into aggression. Into despair.
That's why Hereditary is not a ghost movie for me.
It is a film about a family that has no language to talk about pain.
And when there is no language for emotions in the family, they will still find a way to reveal themselves.
Sometimes in the most terrifying way.
