Space explorer field report

Research unit: Earth

Genre: Homo sapiens

Observation status: long-term, worrying

Uśmiech gotowy.
W środku alarm, pożar, noc.
Ludzie klaszczą. Dobrze.

Preliminary Register

During subsequent observation cycles, I observed a phenomenon that defies logic, physics and galactic common sense.

Human individuals smile in a state of sadness.

Sometimes even widely.

Sometimes with his teeth.

Sometimes exactly at the moment when the internal alarm systems should howl.

On my planet, a smile means a smile.

On Earth — not necessarily.

Hypothesis 1: Smile as camouflage

The smile seems to have a camouflage function.

The observed object can be:

– tired,

– overwhelmed,

– flooded with emotions,

– close to overload,

And yet it activates the muscles of the face in a "everything is fine" system.

Camouflage works well.

The crowd walks on.

Social predators are losing interest.

The system can function for a while.

Hypothesis 2: Smile as a safety signal

A smile is sometimes a signal sent not to the world, but to others:

"Don't worry about me."

"Let's not make a scene."

"Don't burden yourself with my condition."

This is a short-range message.

Often sent automatically.

Sometimes against current emotional data.

Hypothesis 3: Smile as a survival system

The most disturbing hypothesis.

A smile is not for joy.

It serves to survive in a social structure that does not tolerate sadness without justification, form and deadline.

An object that does not smile enough is sometimes considered to:

– difficult,

– ungrateful,

– problematic,

– "too emotional" or "not emotional enough" at the same time.

So a smile becomes a pass.

Researcher's personal observation

I admit:

I learned this behavior myself.

I smiled when I was having a hard time.

I smiled to end the conversation.

I smiled so as not to explain.

I smiled so as not to be noticed too much.

On my planet, this would be considered a system error.

On Earth, this is the norm.

Interim applications

A smile in humans is not an indicator of happiness.

It is a tool.

Mask.

A defense mechanism.

Sometimes with a silent cry for someone to finally ask without haste.

The study remains open.

The object is still smiling.

Final annotation

If you see a smile today, don't assume you know the input.

Report completed.

The Mother Ship is still silent.
